Covercrop Coconut Fibre
The quality of Covercrop coconut fibre, sourced from the finest producers in India, is especially recommended for hydroponic cultivation, but, in addition, thanks to its enrichment with NPK fertiliser, it provides an ideal natural substrate for all types of cultivation.
It is also recommended for soil improvement or for mixing with other substrates. It provides a medium where the air-to-particle ratio is optimal for water retention and root development.
Coconut fibre is obtained from the husk of the fruits of the Cocos Nucifera palm. The industry processes the fruit, the coconut, and one of its uses is the fibres from the outer part of the husk for use in gardening and horticulture as a substrate. Up to three particle sizes are processed and blended: Fine dust: has the appearance of fine peat and increases the water retention capacity. Standard and coarse (chip): Particles ranging from 0.2 to mm. They promote proper aeration of the substrate.
On the other hand, thanks to the high cation exchange capacity of Covercrop Coconut, positively charged nutrients such as Na+ and K+ cations are released and made available to plants during cultivation. In contrast, divalent cations such as Ca2+ and Mg2+ remain bound to the substrate fibres and will not be available to plants to the same extent as Na and K. This is corrected by subjecting the substrate to a double pre-treatment known as washing and buffering. During this process, the coconut fibres are subjected to a series of water washes to remove excess sodium and chlorides.
Next, the substrate is improved with calcium nitrate in order to enhance the calcium-potassium exchange. This correction is known as buffering and ensures that the coconut substrate does not release excessive amounts of potassium or retain excessive amounts of calcium and magnesium, so that they remain available to the plants.
